Stanley Yelnats, a boy who's great great grandfather is cursed by Madame Zeroni, gets wrongly accused of stealing a pair of shoes. When he gets to Camp Green Lake he finds out that the person who really stole the shoes was at this camp, too for committing another crime. Then he finds out is was Zero, but Zero tells why he stole the shoes and Stanley of course, understood. At the end Stanley becomes much thinner (he was fat when he came to camp.) So, Stanley must uncurse his family all because of his dirty-rotten-pig-stealing-great-great-grandfather. And in the end, he does by carrying Zero, Hector Zeroni, up the mountain.

You have to first assess the problem. there are a lot of problems in both the plot and subplot. but for now, we are going to assess the plot with Stanley Yelnats. [Look for the asterisk if you are already familiar with the plot of Holes.]

in the beginning, he was convicted of a crime that he was innocent of. eventually, a new conflict is introduced as he is sent to Camp Green Lake (it was either this or go to jail), which is to survive CGL. also, he has to face the isolation of being "the new kid" and get used to his new environment. afterwards deemed "one of the guys", Stanley is christened Caveman and finds a gold tube which leads to the introduction of the Warden. a newer problem is introduced because Stanley eventually realizes that they are not digging for character, but for something hidden. But what?

later on in the book (the rest of the plot seems mainly tedious to recount to me), Stanley finds what the Warden was primarily looking for: the "buried treasure" of Kissin' Kate Barlow that was lost. however, she is guilty of making another problem: faking the event that the suitcase containing the treasure was hers and that Stanley had stolen it. however, Zero (Hector) announced that it belonged to Stanley Yelnats because it had the name carved upon it.

* eventually, the warden has to give up the campus grounds, she goes to jail, blah blah blah, Stanley and Zero assume they are rich but only find a small fortune of 2000 dollars worth, Zero finds his mum, Stanley's Baseball hero Clyde "Sweet Feet" Livingston no longer thinks him a thief, his dad becomes successful in solving foot odor, and the generation long curse upon the Yelnats is lifted. Problem solved.

NOTE: the subplot is important to read in order to understand the plot itself, as told when Stanley thought that "Mary Lou would look great in a bikini when the owner of the boat itself (the boat was named the Mary Lou) was rowing".

The main conflict in the book Holes was that Stanley was sent to prison for something he did not do, and it was resolved when he helped shut down Camp Green Lake (and found out Zero took the shoes). A conflict is a struggle between opposing forces.
