Incredibly popular, like Jurassic Park or Titanicin the nineties -- everybody, everybody went to see it. Actually, it was the first summer blockbuster movie. Its huge success prompted studios to start releasing all their big action/thriller movies during the summer.
My guitar teacher once told me that when Jaws came out, it was the summer that he and all his friends got their driver's licenses. But even though all the kids could now drive to the beach to party, nobody wanted to go because they were all afraid of sharks.
There were many top-grossing movie before it, but Steven Spielberg's "Jaws" (1975) changed the complexion of the film industry. The movie earned $260 million domestically and $470 million worldwide, but it also changed the ways that movies were marketed and released.

There were a LOT of technical problems in the making of Jaws (1975). So many that the crew nicknamed the movie Flaws. The biggest problem was that the mechanical sharks kept breaking. Saltwater kept getting into the mechanisms.Filming a movie at sea also posed many problems. Cameras were damaged by the water, other boats would zoom by during takes, and the set -- the boat called the Orca -- actually started sinking once, with all the actors on it!For more information about the making of Jaws, see the Related Link below.

It is an exaggerated version of a true story about a great white shark that became a man-eater and killed lots of people (not quite as many as in the movie though) along the USA's east coast.
Robert Shaw. [Steven Spielberg wanted Sterling Hayden to play Quint, but there were too many complications. Shaw was not originally enthusiastic about the part, but his son saw the potential of Jaws to be a hit at the box office and advised him to take it.]
