This really does depend on the industry that you work for!
However, most office workers work a 40 hour week. As a working day usually includes an hour lunch break - it will mean that the work day is usually from 8am to 5pm.
That said, many companies are beginning to introduce flexi-time which allows workers to decide their own working hours, around the company's core hours. eg. working 7am to 4pm, or 9am to 6pm.
In other industries, especially trade/industry positions, it is quite common for workers to be required to work Saturday mornings too.
Entertainment and retail industries are usually operational up to 12 hours a day, 7 days a week - so workers in these industries would more often than not work shifts.
The workers work week is officially 45 hours, but because of the poor transport network is in reality much longer. If an average worker has to start at 8am then often they will have to get up at 4am to get to work on time. That shift will be 9 hours plus another 4 hours in reality. The average minimum pay worker working for the local Shopping Chain called Shoprite/Checkers will only get the equivalent of US$100 per calender month. And for that they have to work 12 hour days.
The average clipcard weekly bus ticket costs R72 (US$7.2/GBP4.00) and food costs upwards of R350 per week. (US$35/GBP20) .
The average office worker will start at 9am and finish at 4.30. The average blue collar worker will start at 8am and stop at 6pm. Those wages are from R4500 pcm. Lower to Middle Management get upwards of R10000 and are expected to work as many hours as it takes.
CEO's get upwards from R100 000-R650 000 per calender month.
