Two ways - either by winning a local constituency (called an "electorate") or by being on a political party's "list". If you win the most votes in an electorate, you are elected to that seat.

If the party you are a member of wins more than 5% of the vote and you're high enough on the party's list, then you become a "list MP".

once perm residence is granted you can apply for citizenship after 5 years. Perm residence gives you almost all the same rights as a kiwi except the right to a passport and to become an MP apart from that you can vote, study, and receive all the other benefits of being a NZer.

You must live with the kiwi partner for 12 months before applying and it takes 4-10months to get perm residence, however you can get a temp visa after living together for 6months which allows you to live in NZ for one year while they process your perm visa.

If it is proven that you entered into a fraudulent marriage solely for immigration purposes, your citizenship can be revoked.
