As far as I know the entire process can be completed in about 6 weeks. Especially if you arent usuing a lawyer. Once the paperwork is submitted to the courts, you just need to wait for a date. They really just go off of the separation agreement (if you have one) and property settlement agreement. If you agreed to it when you signed it, they expect you to agree to it when it is finalized, depending on how long the separation. It has been my experience in NJ that the longer the separation example anything over 18 months they really wont change anything. If you lived with it for 18 months and its been fine, they expect you to continue to live with it. Maybe a lawyer would be able to get things changed, but for the amount of money you would be fighting over, (lets face it, if you had alot of money to fight over, you would already have a lawyer) wouldn't cost nearly as much as an attorney might. Especially depending on how old your kids are, if there are any. How close to 18? May not be worth it to you. If you are paying child support pay it on time. Other than that, the judge just expects you to be self sufficient. Most people really fight over alimony and support. There is no such thing as lifetime alimony in NJ. I was married for 22 years. It wont happen. Getting a job and making my own money was the best thing I ever could have done for me and my kids.
