Portugal sent explorers to India. The first was Vasco da Gama in 1498. The Hindu ruler of Calicut demanded gold as customs duties. Da Gama used force to bring home goods to Portugal. by 1502, the Portuguese built a fort in India. Da Gama came back with 15 ships and 800 men. He bombed the city and demanded all Arabs leave. The Portuguese built more forts and controlled much of the land in western India. The headquarters was Goa. The Portuguese did give Bombay to England as dowry for Princess Catherine to marry Charles II. The Portuguese refused to give back their Indian possessions even after the British gave independence to India in 1947. In 1961, the Indian army invaded Goa, Daman and Diu. Finally the Portuguese surrendered.
