Lake Taupo, (New Zealand) the lake infilling the Taupo caldera lies at 356m above sea level. The area of Lake Taupo is about 616km2. It drains into the Waikato River.

Its last significant eruption was around 180 CE (common era), though there has been a smaller one since then. Taupo is dormant rather than extinct, and has erupted at least 28 times in the last 27 000 years. It has permanent hydrothermal activity along a portion of the shore.

Its various eruptions rate VEI 7 or 8, (Volcanic Explosivity Index) and it first erupted, as far as has been determined, about 26500 years ago.
