Surf, as in "Surf's up" is "Branders" - it means big waves. Most young urban Afrikaners will just say "surf".

Surfing, as in riding a board on a wave is "Branderplankry" or literally Wave Board Riding. Again, 'surf' will do the trick among people who surf.

Language purity in Afrikaans is a thing of the past. The language is adapting rapidly.
