Christopher Columbus gave the West Indies that name because long ago they thought the world was flat. He decided to go to India but travel West . On his journey ,when he finally saw land he thought it was India but the people there were Arawak went back to Europe he told this of his discovery and since he traveled west to try to get to India but failed ,they called it WEST INDIES/ WEST INDIA its kind of the same thing.
