Ghana is known as the land of Gold because the Europeans that first settled in Ghana found a lot of gold on the coast line so its name Gold Coast in the precolonial era. There was so much gold it baffled the Europeans and the native then did not know what was the use of that substance and this is not a myth. Those who found it and knew it took it away with the exception of what was left in the rocks which could not easily be carried away. To keep the facts straight it is not true that its neighbors have more gold. Nigeria has a lot of oil and not gold. The only other country that can be compared to Ghana in terms of gold will be South Africa and that's not in the Ghanaian region.
