The East India Company was a trading company which was given a Charter during the reign of Elizabeth 1, Queen of England. During the course of their trading in India they retained their own armies for protection of their trading posts. The French and Dutch also had trading interests in India at that time. Eventually, the East India Company took greater administrative roles within different states in India, to protect their commercial interests. Their armies fought and defeated many of the Rajah's armies. Each time this happened the Company would appoint someone to help the defeated Rajah to rule in their State, or occasionally the Company deposed the Rajah and put somebody of their choice on the throne ( a puppet ruler), who would do as the Company instructed.
