In 1935 the electors decided the future of their area in a vote, and over 90% voted to rejoin Germany. This vote (plebiscite) was provided for in the Versailles Treaty and was done with foreign observers present. It was all legal and above board. On March 1, 1935, Germany took over the Saar.
