The name of 'Bugs Bunny' came from the character design from Ben "Bugs" Hardaway who sketched one of the first prototypes of the character with the last version by Tex Avery being the one we now know as the definitive Bugs Bunny .
A staff member referred to Hardaway's design as Bug's Bunny - note the apostrophe .
In 1935, the character we've come to know as Bugs Bunny wasn't officially named anything and was only referred to as "Happy Rabbit" based on the fact that he was clearly drawn as a rabbit and his expression was a joyous one. In 1940 the character went through a bit more of a character design and made his animated cartoon debut in the Merrie Melodies short "A Wild Hare." In this short, he was still unnamed and wouldn't get the official "Bugs Bunny" moniker until the next Merrie Melodies short titled "Elmer's Pet Rabbit."
