Imperialism was in full force in the late 1800s, and largely ended with World War I. Imperialism, broadly defined, is when a strong nation takes over a weak nation in order to exploit the resources of the weaker nation.

Excluding the Spanish American War in 1898, the only active imperialism conducted by the United States was using force to resettle tribes of Native Americans. The Federal Government did this because they could do it. Because of the number of troops and weapons at the disposal of the Government, the US Native Americans found themselves in reservations scattered around the USA.

Problems with Mexico over what is now the area from San Francisco to what is now Arizona and New Mexico, were fights among both these countries over the land. Mexico and the USA basically took over this large area. With Spain out of the picture, Mexico's Imperialism met the USA's imperialism over land that did not belong to either country. Thus, I don't think "Imperialism" fits these conflicts.

Now The Monroe Doctrine issued during President Monroe's tenure as President is a point in history many of us can remember. France & Germany had eyes on Mexico and the British Empire maintained processions in the Western Hemisphere. The USA, following the advice of George Washington, did not wish to become involved with European intrigues which were "global" in context.

Although not entirely enforceable the Monroe Doctrine warned European nations not to dabble in affairs anywhere near the USA. It must be noted that Florida and Cuba as example, were still Spanish territories.

Bottom line is that Imperialism was not part of the USA's 19th century foreign policy.

n the late nineteenth century the balance of power in Europe had destabilized with the unifications of Italy but especially, Germany. Germany had come to be ruled by the unpredictable Kaiser Wilhelm II, who dismissed Otto Von Bismarck as German chancellor but, worse yet had ignored his advice that in any disagreement between powers always be in a group of 3 Great Powers. Also the rise of non european powers such as the USA(after the Spanish american war of 1898) and Japan(after the Sino-Japanese War of 1894 and the Russo-Japanese War of 1904-05) further added to instability. As a result an arms race began between the powers in the area of battleships which would last until the eve of World war I in 1914. The building of great fleets caused the powers to form colonies around the world for coaling bases for their fleets, this is one of the reasons the USA kept the Philippines in 1898.

Opening new trading markets was another reason. During this period there was the temptation to keep taking land from the dying imperial china. There was also the scramble for Africa in the 1880's after the continent was carved up between the great powers at the Congress of Berlin. England would fight numerous wars in Africa to gain territory. These wars included the Zulu War,and the Boer Wars, it was empire building gone wild.

This of course led to nationalism, the belief your country is the greatest and that it had the right to do whatever it wanted.

The problem was the great powers didn't trust each other. By 1907 the Triple entante of England, France and, Russia had developed followed shortly by the Triple Alliance of Germany, Austria-Hungry and, Italy. This was the trap the powers built and they were the mice it would kill. For on July 28, 1914 all the imperialism, militarism and nationalism of the last 40 years would slam shut on the powers as World war I erupted when Austria-Hungry invaded Serbia.
