Author and Oz series originator Lyman Frank Baum [May 15, 1856-May 5, 1919] gave no last name to Aunt Em or to her husband Uncle Henry. Dorothy's last name was Gale. But Baum didn't let us in on the exact nature of the relationship between Dorothy and her foster parents. Was there a blood relationship? If so, on which side was the relationship? Later in the Oz book series, Dorothy met her Cousin Zeb, who referred to "your" Uncle Henry's wife's sister. Also, later in the series, Uncle Henry described Dorothy as a dreamer, just like her Mother. Both of these statements would lead readers to suspect a blood relationship, such as that between a niece and her maternal uncle.
The opposite relationship of uncle would be Niece or Nephew.(The opposite gender is aunt.)
