A2. Cleaning with toothpaste would be likely to leave the cleaner in the tiny grooves. And it is not common for small scratches to interfere with the playing of a CD or DVD. If you can detect the scratch in the reproduction, the time may be right for a visit to the shop.

Never use toothpaste to clean your discs; it is abrasive and can scratch them. To clean your discs, simply wipe them with a soft cotton cloth, such as tee shirt fabric, and never use paper towels or tissues. All paper products are made from wood pulp, and they can leave scratches in the discs. That's why they are never to be used for cleaning eye glasses, either. If the discs are very dirty, use a cleaner made specifically for this, or use a soft cotton cloth that is very slightly damp, then dry thoroughly with a dry soft cotton cloth. I would also advise to let it air dry about an hour longer after wiping dry before using. Even the tiniest bit of moisture can cause damage to your computer, CD player, etc.
