yes.A foreign driver's license may be used in South Africa as long as it is in English. If the original is not in English, a translation must be obtained. It is, however, recommended that a "green card license" be obtained from Cape Town's Traffic Department. Foreign licenses cannot be replaced if they are lost or stolen in South Africa and some foreign licenses may not be covered by South African car insurers. For further information contact the Cape Town Traffic Department on: +27 21 419-2200.International Driving Permit:An IDP is recommended, because if you have an accident some insurance companies will insist on seeing one. Additionally, those licences that do not incorporate a photograph need to be accompanied by photographic proof of identity. An IDP may also be required for car hire.To apply for an IDP go to http://www.theaa.com/getaway/idp/motidp002.html
I did so in June 2005 - I was able to drive a rented car with a South African passport and drivers license. As long as you have your licence, and you know how to drive with patience... I realised they are more impatient in SA than here in the UK.
EDIT: LEGALLY - you can only drive for six monthsin the UK on an international licence. If you're here longer than that - you are required by law to take a UK driving test ! After the six months has expired, your licence is invalid - and you can be arrested if caught driving. ALSO - once your licence is expired, you no longer have insurance and the vehicle can be seized and crushed !
No you would drive into the ocean. You have to fly there, From London to SA is about 4 hours

However, while possible, it would be berry difficult to negotiate all the borders and countries on the way, particularly across the Middle East.
You could also drive up into Tunisia and catch a ferry to Spain.
