It depends on what town/city you're talking about. Movie theaters in New York City are always open on Christmas Day, and they do very good business.
Because New York City has the largest Jewish population outside of Israel, a very significant number of New Yorkers do not celebrate Christmas. So, movie theaters, as well as a lot of restaurants (especially Chinese restaurants) are open on Christmas Day.
And it's not just Jews who don't celebrate Christmas. Especially in Brooklyn, there are a lot of Muslims, too. In fact, over 170 different languages are spoken in New York City. So, if anything, Christians are the minority.

I highly doubt there is anyone tracking this statistic. Both options give completely different experiences anyway. I personally believe most people would prefer to see things in theaters so they can achieve the full effect of the film at its highest quality. However; rentals are generally cheaper and are of course far easier to fit into a busy schedule. So really the choice is likely based more on lifestyle, time constraints and budget more often than on preference On a personal note: I don't make a choice between the two. I choose to see a certain number of films in theaters each year based purely on whether I have time to fit them into my schedule. And as for viewing movies at home; I prefer to purchase everything I'm interested in rather than renting.

Your best bet is to go to a Black Friday sale really early, so you can avoid a bunch of people trying to get in. You should also plan on what you intend to buy before-hand, so you don't end up wandering around the whole store.
My guess would be that the theaters are afraid Of offending customers. I live in the Adirondacks . There are three groups of people up here, public service employees, Welfare recipients and progressive wealthy Transplants and tourists. Hardworking Patriots are few or too busy or frugal to Waste $20 on the garbage in theaters today
The term 'Black Wednesday' is used for Thanksgiving Eve because the day after Thanksgiving was often referred to as 'Black Friday', so simply put the term was applied similarly to the day before Thanksgiving. The term Black Friday came to fruition as result of the heavy amount of traffic that was common place as result of it being such a busy shopping day and being an extremely stressful and chaotic experience like the stock market crash of 1929, i.e. 'Black Tuesday'.
