Typically this is caused by an obstruction or restriction in the gas system. The gas can seep to the engine's carburetor but not enough to keep it running. After being off a while the carb fills up with enough to run it for about a minute and then runs out again.
One thing to check before you get into the system too far is to make sure the vent in the gas cap is clear. If it can't get air into the tank it will do what you are describing. Try running it without the cap and see if it runs OK. If it does, take a paperclip or something small like that and clear out the little hole in the cap.
If the gas cap doesn't take care of the problem then try addng some "SEA FOAM" to the gas and run it. That is a fuel system cleaner. You can get this at most auto parts stores. Follow the directions on the can. Hopefully this will take care of the problem.
If it is a two stroke clean out the muffler.
