The first ATVs were three-wheelers; consumer advocate groups and television programs like 20/20 campaigned against the triples because too many people were being injured or killed by the first ATVs when the machines rolled.
Motorcycle manufacturers responded with the advent of the four wheeler, which were much more stable. I think all in all this turned out to be a success for the bike makers.
