∙ 12y agowe use the same fluid as the engine oil.
As long as it doesn't have friction modifiers, engine oil is fine. Oils with friction modifiers might make the clutch plates slip. You can tell which oil has friction modifiers by the starburst symbol on the container. Usually 10-30 or lighter has friction modifiers; 10-40 or heavier does not.
ATF type F works fine, and you can tell if you have an engine or primary leak by the red color.

∙ 12y agoThe primary oil does three things. Lube the clutch. Lube the primary chain . And cool the stator. If Harley thought Dextron would do this, they would have recommended the use of it. Keep your Harley a Harley.
What year model is this Harley or make. The oil in the primary is self contained. It's a 1982 FLHT shovelhead that shares engine oil for the primary chain. I'm removing the chain and replacing it with a belt so I need to block the lines off somehow
1 qt of primary oil
Harley has what they call primary chaincase lube, but because you are only oiling the chain, even though the clutch is also inside the primary, you should use only enough oil to catch on the ring gear allowing it to be flung up onto the chain, and it really can be any oil that you think lubricates your chain. In the absence of HD lube, I use the same 20-50 wt oil that goes in my oil tank
A type of primary oil that can b used for a Harley Fat Boy is Lucus Primary specific oil & Lucus 85/140. This can be purchased at auto repair shops.
The primary oil goes in the clutch cover (derby) opening, or if you wish you can remove the oval-shaped chain inspection cover and pour it in there. Use one quart.
It depends on the model.
The most common cause is a grounded stator. Lack of primary oil or a too-tight chain can also cause excessive chaincase heat.
with any Harley sitting strait up as on a bike lift the primany chain is just covered with oil as seen through the inspection plate.
No oil in crankcase in a Harley Big Twin. All FXR's take three quarts in the oil tank.
One quart.
Though Harley has an exact amount in ounces, the idea is to have enough oil in the primary case so that the starter ring gear will sling oil up on to the primary chain, so when the bike is standing straight up, approximately 1/2 quart is enough, and one full quart is too much.
