Briggs and Stratton does not release specific compression values. Anything above 120 psi should be just fine, around 90-100 and you're most likely due for a rebuild. A better test is a leakdown test, with can help in determining where compression is being lost.
Three specs are considered critical; the connecting rod cap at 110 in-lbs, the sump cover at 110 in-lbs and the cylinder head at 165 in-lbs.
My daughters mini bike with a 3hp Briggs has 80psi compression and runs great. A motor I got "running" off eBay has 55psi compression, runs but has NO power. -Jason

Use a straight 30wt oil of your choice. It does depend on if it is the old flat head valve engines, or the new over-head valve engines, which is because of the new EPA laws....all flat heads use 30 hd... the over-head valve engines 10-w30, although prefrence is your own, Briggs & Strattons oil is actually Mobil 1, ( I seen that when I toured Briggs & Strattons factory while working for Central Distributors of Briggs.) Briggs & Stratton recommends the use of SAE 30w detegent oil with an automotive rating of "SJ" or higher when ambient air temperatures are 40 degrees or higher. Under 40 degrees it is acceptable to use a 10w-30 or 5w-30 depending on the weather, but air cooled engines run hotter than liquid cooled so check and change oil frequently. It is also acceptable to use a SYNTHETIC 5w-30 oil year round, but the oil must be changed as often as regular engine oil.
How do you change the oil in a 1967 3Hp Evin-rude outboard motor?
