V-Stars, including the 650, are a bit tricky with your run of the mill Harbor Freight/Pep Boys/Sears $100-$200 lifts. The center point is with the front rail under the engine. However, the engine protrudes below the frame. This creates an unstable lift point and puts undue stress on the casing. A solution is to put 2x4's or 1x4's under the frame on each side and across the lift's rails. This will provide the necessary clearance to get the lift safely under the center point without having the engine casing rest on it.

It's easy to take the tank off this model bike. Remove the seat, then you will see the two bolts that hold the rear of the tank. Turn the gas tank selector valve to "off" then remove the fuel line. When you start to lift the tank off the two front rubber tank locators you will see the wire bundle that comes back to the under-seat area from the speedometer. Disconnect it at the plug and the tank will lift off easily.

beneath the vehicle
It is under the seat toward the front of the seat and rear of the tank. Remove the drivers seat to get to the battery. It maybe be necessary to loosen th tank in several spots to lift the tank slightly. On the Yamaha r1 2004-2008 you have to lift the tank as well to get it out. Good luck!
