No. The DC output from the voltage regulator is connected directly to either the positive terminal of the battery or the hot side of the starter relay on some older models.

Do you need a voltage regulator if you have an alternator?

yes to regulate the current before it in to the battery.

What is a regulator on a 50cc motorbike do?

the regulator takes the power produced from the alternator and converts it to the correct voltage before going into the battery.

Where is the voltage regulator located on a 3910 Ford Tractor?

There is a plate behind the battery and before the fuel tank, where the voltage regulator should be bolted. It is a small, metal rectangular box, with four wires coming from it.

Why would power be received before breaker but with breaker on no power is in any recepticles?

The voltage before the breaker is from the distribution panel's buss bars. This voltage is controlled by the panel's main breaker. To have no voltage on the terminal of the breaker means that either the breaker is shut off or it has gone into a trip position. If it has tripped push the handle of the breaker to the off position and then to the on position. This should reset the breaker. If the voltage is not present at the output terminal of the breaker after resetting it, then replace the breaker as it has a fault in it.

Lights flicker on dashboard and headlights after replacing battery on 2003 pt cruiser what causes this?

it is caused by the alternator voltage regulator switching on and off to charge the battery, this problem is encountered on many makes of car, you may not of noticed it before prior to exchanging the battery.

Why do the voltage battery light keep coming on after a new battery has been installed?

Ah, you have made one of the most common and easiest mistakes to make in automotive maintenance. Because the 'battery voltage' idiot light came on, you assumed that the battery was bad. Did you have an automotive electrical specialist test the electrical system on your car? Did you have the battery tested at a battery shop? Did you know that there are 3 primary parts to an automotive electrical system, and anyone of them can be responsible for the system operating below required voltage levels? Most modern automobiles generate electricity with a device called an alternator, which is driven by a belt from the crankshaft. The alternator generates Direct Current, at voltages up to 20 volts, in some cases. To keep the alternator from frying the battery, a Voltage Regulator is used to control the output of the alternator. This insures that the battery is only charged with a current of 18 volts, or less. Most modern alterators have the voltage regulator inside, but on older cars, the voltage regulator is mounted on the fender or the firewall, somewhere in the engine compartment. So, the alternator generates the electricity used to charge the battery, but the voltage regulator controls the output of the alternator. If the alternator is going bad, it may not be generating enough voltage to charge the battery. The battery is usually a 12 volt battery, and must see more than 12 volts to charge. Or, the alternator output might be reduced to an unusable level by the voltage regulator. Before you replace the entire electrical system, take the car to an automotive electrical specialist for testing. They can determine exactly which component is not working, and repair it. (Note: If the voltage regulator is bad, this DOES NOT mean that the entire alternator must be replaced! In almost all cases, the voltage regulator can be replaced by disassembling the alternator. If the specialist insists that the alternator must be replaced, I would recommend getting a second opinion, even though testing is often not free. Voltage regulators are fairly cheap, and can be replaced by a competent technician without too much difficulty. Alternators are expensive.)

Does the power supplied to trip shunt trip breaker have to be applied momentarily or can it latch?

A shunt-trip breaker trips when voltage is applied to the coil. It does not self-reset when the voltage is removed, the breaker must be reset manually. The trip voltage can either latch or be applied momentarily, but must be de-energized before the breaker will reset.

Where is the voltage regulator 1999 escort zx2?

Hi there the voltage regulator isnormally located at the back of the alternator which is located at the front side of the engine. there is a simple way to check that the regulator is working and that is to connect a multimeter to the car battery but before connecting it to the battery make sure that the multimeter is set to 20 volts dc then connect the red test lead to the battery positive terminal usually marked with a + mark and the negative test lead to the negative battery terminal then start the engine you should get a reading of 13.8 volts then rev the engine slightly and observe the reading it should increase to between 14 and 15 volts but no more than this if it is much higher then the regulator is probably faulty test 2 with the meter still connected to the battery and engine running switch on all lights ect and the voltage should drop below 13 volts switch all lights ect off and it should return to 13.8 volts this will confirm the voltage regulator is working. hope this helps from kev.

Motorcycle battery overheating?

check voltage across battery and the crank motorcycle and run at high idle or ride aound the block and come back and check voltage across the battery again at high idle without shutting down the engine. this will stabilize the battery from the starting cycle. you really want to see around 13.8 to 14.2 volts, if not, could be a bad regulator. if your lights are brighter than normal it probably is. before you replace the regulator, remove the battery and have it tested. most auto parts stores will do this free of charge. if you have marginal cells, the battery will over heat.

How do I Polorize a motorcycle generator?

Before starting.Use a heavy cable.Touch one end to the post on the voltage regulator marked field(fld) and the other end to the post marked battery (bat) .You should hear a click. Polorizing is complete.

Why would a Dodge Caravan show high voltage?

Bad voltage regulator. Replace it. Should be built in the altenator. Or just replace the altenator. Make sure you're battery is disconnected first. Also connect battery back up after you mount new altenator. Note not knowing year of van some older cars have a external voltage regulater. Which means it will be mounted someware on the firewall or inner fenderwall not in the altenator. Make sure you disconnect battery before working on any electrical. This is importent on voltage regulaters. Because they require to be pollerized. Also check battery high voltage will cook a battery. It over charges it.

Why does a car engine still need a battery if it can generate its own electricity?

It needs the battery to store enough energy to restart the engine when it has been turned off. Without the battery you would have to start the engine manually with a crank (as they did on early cars before the invention of the electric starter). Also, the battery is a critical part of the voltage regulator system for the alternator used in modern car electrical systems to prevent variations in the voltage of the electrical system with changes in engine speed, etc.
