can nails and screws be a solution?
depends on the wood, nails, screws. but both are ok use
One screws one nails use joints not screws and nails.
Screws are threaded to twist in when turned with a screwdriver. Nails are smooth to slide in straight when pounded with a hammer.
Screws
In general, screws are stronger than nails of similar size. In other words, it is much easier to pull out a nail than a screw. Not all carpentry jobs require that degree of strength, however, so sometimes it is perfectly appropriate to use nails. I would have to know what you are building, to say if you should be using screws or nails. Nails, of course, are easier to install, and also less expensive, so for some jobs that are better.
The most common method is with one or more screws or nails. Wood screws are especially made for the purpose. But screws and nails are not the only option. They can be bolted or pinned together, for example. with a bolt
Fine woodworking is the use of no nails or screws.

It depends on what 'the old days' means. Screws are more expensive than nails and easier to emplace. That has been the advantage of nails for most people for a long time.
Nails are driven into wood by force, and the tightness of fitting into the hole holds the material together. Screws twist into the material, and the threads of the screws bite into the wood, giving better holding power.
