500 million to a Billion Cruise Line Companies came up with other ways to improve their service for new and old passengers who loves to take a cruise to relax and pamper themselves. As cruising is one of the fastest growing trend in tourism, the need for more cruise ships and crews is also climbing. But with this problematic economy, and the price tag a new cruise ship has, which is more or less a billion dollars, would it still be best to build new ships?
Check out this article. Apparently this one was the most expensive at the time.

It does cost millions to build cruise ships that is why most cruise line companies are now going for renovation. Most old cruise ships are undergoing renovations and improvements as this is cheaper than getting a new one./
It is difficult to cite an "average cost" of a container ship. There are a number of variables involved, and gross variances can be encountered figuring out the cost of given vessel, even if the specifications are set. A current contract running in India will see 8 ships with a capacity of about 9,600 TEU delivered for about $130 million US. (The TEU is capacity measured in twenty-foot equivalent units meaning standard 20-foot containers.) Note that the cost of the vessel described is based on a contract for multiple (8!) units. Your per cost average will be higher for a single ship like the one given as an example.
I can't answer the manufacturing cost question but I can give you a little information about them:
The largest ship by length-width ever built was built in 1979 by Sumitomo Heavy Industries Oppama Shipyard. The owner was unable to take delivery so the shipyard sold it to recoup their costs. It proved to be too large for practical use. It is now beached for scrap.

The largest ship by gross tonnage were the Batillus class built in France during the 1970s. The Batillus and the Bellyamya both had a gross tonnage of 275,276 tons. They served for 9-10 years.
