Excavate means to dig up, generally out of the ground. Example sentence: A bull dozer was used to excavate the foundation of the building.
I think it will help to have a proper soil for the foundation to be laid
It isn't as critical as to how close you excavate to building foundations. You want to be more careful not to excavate below a building's foundation. As a geotechnical engineer, we recommend that excavations for additions or appertenant structures not be extended within a 2 horizontal to 1 vertical oversize area extending down and away from the outside edge of the existing building's foundation. Hopefully this helps.

For a foundation for a building, it is necessary to excavate at least below the soil zone, and further, sufficiently to enable a strong enough concrete foundation to support the intended building. Commonly, the base of the trench (the footing) will be a few times wider than the actual width of the foundation wall, so as to provide sufficient load bearing for the building.
