The Vulcan had 4 Rolls Royce Olympus turbojets, very similar engines to those which powered Concorde but without the afterburners that were added to the Concorde engines. The Vulcan had several different engine types over the different marks each more powerful than the earlier one. The Avons used in the Mark ! were around 12,000lbs static thrust, and the Olympus 201 was 18,000lbs static thrust , the 301, 22,000lbs. The maximum loaded weight was 220,00lbs. The engines were amongst the most powerful available for the reason that the V Force of which the Vulcan was a part had only 4 minutes warning of a nuclear strike by the Soviet Union. This meant that the aircraft had to not only get airborne in that time but also get far enough away from the airfield to survive the blast of the incoming atomic bombs. The fastest I ever got airborne in a 4 aircraft scramble from being static with no engines running to all four airborne was 1min 47 seconds!
