The Model 96 pod was originally designed so the F-101 Voodoo could carry a W-5 80 kiloton nuclear warhead, and extra fuel for the aircraft. Weapons development was happening so quickly that it was then intended to carry the W-15 (1-3 megaton yield) thermonuclear warhead. The pod was later modified to carry the W-27 thermonuclear warhead (yield: 2 megatons). The pod-aircraft combination was always problematic (stability and buffeting issues) and the project was discontinued with the development of the Mk-28 weapon.
