Some sources state that approximately 12 B52s were lost to accidents (called operational losses in the military). Approximately 30 B52s were lost in the Vietnam War, most were downed by North Viet SAM systems, but the North Vietnamese Air Force does claim shooting one (or two) down with their MiG21s during Operation Linebacker II in 1972. The USAF denies that aerial victory, claiming that particular Stratofortress was lost to a SAM during that mission.
Two US B52 tailgunners did receive confirmed MiG21 kills during that same air campaign. Their aircraft are now preserved and on display at the USAF academy and a museum.
