After a man's been hit with high velocity metal (projectiles=shrapnel, bullets, fragmentation, etc.) and usually with some concussion to go with it...he normally DOES NOT look pretty. He DOES NOT look like Hollywood films depict dead or wounded bodies. The closest and best description of men hit by, as an example, a 122mm rocket would be a "road kill" found on the highway.
During the Viet War, "one" of the greatest fears of the standard (ordinary) GI was "looking like that!" On some of the steel helmets (on the cloth camoflage covers) were sometimes written the words, "Live Fast, Die Young, be a beautiful corpse!"
Hamburger was a polite name for that fight; as men looked like hamburger meat when they were chewed up by high velocity projectiles (bullets) and explosions (includes concussion).
Men looked like hamburger meat once they'd been impacted by high velocity projectiles (bullets and shrapnel, and concussion). Do NOT believe in television or any other action packed movie filmed in the 21st century (and a lot of 20th century films). Human bodies look like road kills on modern battlefields. In movies, especially COP SHOWS, every "body" looks like the person is just laying down (which they are) or sleeping (which they might be). That's NOT the way they look in real life. The number one greatest fear of the average GI in Vietnam was not dying! It was looking like "THAT" (a road kill)! There was a saying in Vietnam (one of many), "Live fast, die young, and be a BEAUTIFUL CORPSE!"

The survivors of "Hamburger Hill", would be the men of the 3/187th, 1/506th, 2/506th, and the 2/501st battalions of the 101st Airborne (Airmobile) Divison. With probably the least amount of survivors coming from the 3rd Battalion 187th Infantry Regiment; as they sustained the most casualties.
