The Vatican guard corps is not madeup of French troops, but from Swiss. This is a choice from the Vatican authorities based on long-standing practices (Switzerland being a neutral country). Members of the guard have to be male, single, Swiss and Catholic.

What is the difference between color guard and honor guard?

Depending on how far back you go, they are the same thing - color guard has its origins in the military, literally being there to guard the "colors" (aka the flag). Over time it evolved, and you have the modern color guard activity associated with marching bands and winterguards. However, as far as the military is concerned, it IS still called color guard - honor guard is a synonym, most likely used to avoid confusion. For example, at winterguard competitions, there is an honor guard to present the colors.

Who decided to divide Vietnam?

That was quite complicated. After French troops were defeated in the battle of Dien Bien Phu in May 7, 1954, the Geneva Conference (which had been held before) came to an agreement known as the Geneva Accords. In this this set of treaties, France and the Democratic Republic of Vietnam both agreed to withdraw their troops to different parts of the country (Vietnamese forces to the North, and French troops to the South). After that, French army would retreat completely from Vietnam and two regions would unify in an election. However, U.S. government later refused to follow that schedule because they had never signed the Accords. They set up a pro-America government with Ngo Dinh Diem as president in South Vietnam while communists still controlled the North. To conclude, it was France, America and, ironically, Vietnam (didn't know what it was doing) who divided Vietnam.

What is meant by the term The Occupation during World War 2?

"The Occupation" means the time after enemy troops had overrun a country and were still there, controlling day to day life. After Germany had overrun France, for instance, and before France was liberated by Allied troops in 1944-45, France was often called "occupied France". Allied troops went on to overrun Germany and Japan, having already taken most of Italy. The Occupation might generally be thought of as continuing after the war was over, until a civilian government was created in the former enemy nation. Until a civilian government was allowed, Military Government ran the country, under command of the occupying powers. But Allied troops never left Germany or Japan. Germany was divided into four zones - Russian, French, British and American. The Russian zone was east Germany and they set up a communist "civilian" government in East Germany, and Russian troops remained there until the Cold War ended in 1989. The western allies set up a West German state in 1951, in which the citizens were free to vote and practice democracy, but British and American troops remained to help keep the West Germans from being taken over by the Soviets and East Germans. There are still US bases in Germany, though the Cold War ended and Germany was reunified into a single nation twenty years ago. During the Cold War Berlin was ninety miles deep in the Russian Zone, but was divided between the four powers. Berlin was thus often the point of confrontation between the western allies and the Soviets.During the occupation of Japan General MacArthur ran the country, and he and his staff wrote the first Constitution the Japanese had, which they still use. There are also still US bases in Japan, helping Japan guard against the menace of communist China.

Who are the imperial guard?

Imperial Guard is a term for the soldiers who guard an Emporer or a King. This term has been used with Napoleon's troops and the King/Queen of England, Czar of Russia. In the 18th Century, many kings wanted an army of troops who were dedicated to him and would prevent the civilians or the army leaders from over-throwing him.For more modern countries, the Imperial Guard troops were men specially selected to guard the King. This was not an honorary position. In Napoleon's army, he established a complete army of Imperial Guard troops that included cavalry, infantry, artillery and engineers. These acted as his special shock troops in battle. He would keep them in reserve and only use them to exploit a victory or when needed. He still had an elite group of troops who were his personal escort. These were light cavalry called the Chasseurs de la Guard. The Imperial Guards for England provide protection for the Queen and her palaces. They are considered military troops and the soldiers do serve in war. During WW2, there was a Guards Division that consisted of battalions from the various Guards regiments. The British Guards consist of 2 cavalry regiments and 5 infantry regiments. The infantry regiments may look identical but there are variations in button spacing and insignia and plumes to distinguish each one.The 5 British Guards Regiments are:Grenadier GuarrdsColdstream GuardsScots GuardsIrish GuardsWelsh Guards.Imperial Guard could also refer to a miniatures wargame where the Imperial Guard are the main army of the Imperium of Man which spans thousands of worlds. They are kept busy holding of alien menaces, traitors, and demons on all sides. There are millions of guardsmen for every planet in the Imperium. I did not include the name of the game for fear of using copyrighted text.

How many French soldiers were there in Battle of Hastings?

It is important to understand that the Normans were not French. They thought of themselves as Normans and a separate people from the French, although they spoke a dialect of French and had adopted French ideas such as mounted knights, massed archers and castle-building, they were still essentially Scandinavians who had been allowed to settle in Normandy ("the place of the Northmen") to prevent them raiding French territory.William's army included Normans, Bretons, Flemings and troops from Maine, but probably no genuine "French" troops at all.In total William had around 2,000 cavalry, 800 archers and 3,000 infantry; the English army is difficult to estimate but it may have been around 8,000 - all infantry.
