UK Declaring War on GermanyGreat Britain and Poland had a mutual aid treaty that required either country to come to the aid of the other in the event of war. When Germany invaded Poland, Britain (and the Commonwealth) was obligated to come to the aid of Poland by declaring war on Germany.

Here is more input:

  • Germany kept breaking the Treaty of Versailles that ended WW1. Finally when Germany invaded Poland, England had no choice but to declare war. Appeasement by Neville Chamberlain had failed and only encouraged Germany and Hitler, so England knew that Hitler was bent on domination of Europe. England could not allow this to happen.
  • Because Germany invaded Poland. Britain had earlier guaranteed Poland's independence and as a result of German's invasion of Poland, declared war on Germany.

I presume you are talking about WW2. Britain & France had a treaty with Poland to ensure Poland's safety and when Germany invaded Poland in 1939 this treaty was violated and therefore Britain & France had no option but to go to Poland's aid

Britain declared war on Germany in 1914 in response to the German invasion of Belgium.

Belgium had been regarded as a neutral state under international law since 1839. On 1st August Germany declared war on Russia.

The same day Britain asked the ambassadors of both France and Germany if they intended to honour Belgian neutrality in the event of war between themselves.

The French stated immediately that it was their intention to do so. Ominously, the German ambassador declined to give a similar commitment.

At the time they had a complex alliance system that meant that:

Austria-Hungary declared war on Serbia

Russia declared war on Austria-Hungary as they were allies with Serbia

Germany declared war on Russia because they were allies with Austria-Hungary

France and Britain declared war on Germany because they were allies with Russia.

the two allied groups were;

The Triple Entente

Britain

Russia

France

The Triple Alliance

Germany

Italy

Austria-Hungary

Britain joined in the war because of this.

After Germany invaded France, England declared war on Germany because of the mutual defense treaty that it had with France (Russia was also a signatory of that treaty, thus forming the 3 nations known during WW I as the "Triple Entente").

"Italy and Britain remained uncommitted. Italy chose to remain neutral for the time being. Britain had to decide quickly whether or not to support its ally with France. Then, Germany's war plans suddenly made the decision for Britain"

From this I can conclude that Germany was scared that Britain would choose France's side so quickly declared war on Britain.
