Americans needed bases in the South Pacific because they needed some places for boats to fuel up when traveling around to attack japanese. They would not be able to travel halfway around the world on only 1 tank of fuel =p
for vhs ppl = they felt that Japan would have to be invaded .The US/Australia/Britain needed the bases to have a naval base and air base for the ships and plane. They also wanted it to protect Australia, China and the South Pacific Islands. These places had resources, such as fuel and food, to keep the war going until victory.
I don't think the south recruited them but the North recruited African Americans to win the war against the south to make the slaves free.
