It took General Grant nearly two years to take Richmond after being given control of the eastern armies in the late summer of 1863. Grant's forces faced tremendous costs and setbacks in the journey of only about 150 miles from the Potomac to Richmond. This series of horrible, costly, slow-moving battles set an example for World War I, with trench warfare, long-range artillery, set battle lines, mass casualties, and more.
The siege of Vicksburg ended on July 4, 1863. Grant's army arrived in Chattanooga on October 23, 1863. Therefore, it took Grant 2 months, 20 days, or 81 days.

The Battle of Gettysburg, fought from July1 to July3, 1863 in Pennsylvania
The Battle of Gettysburg was fought July 1-3, 1863, in and around the town of Gettysburg, Pennsylvania.
In late June of 1863, President Lincoln became dissatisfied with General Hooker's plans to challenge General Robert E. Lee's advance into Pennsylvania. He relieved Hooker and took the advice of General in Chief Halleck's advice to replace Hooker with Major General George G. Meade. Meade had been a corps commander with the Army of the Potomac.
It took 2days. The battle was fought on June 7-8, 1862. There was another in in 1863 but that lasted less than a day.
Northern troops had the chance to take advantage of their victories at Gettysburg and Vicksburg in the latter half of 1863. Also, the Confederates were forced out of Chattanooga. The Southern armies were in retreat or in strictly defensive postures. Instead of pressing on in some form in these areas, they focused on what can be called secondary targets that the South could afford to lose. This lack of using their power by the Union gave the South extra time to reorganize and resupply their armies.
General James Longstreet and General Lee conducted long talks on Lee's plan to raid Pennsylvania in 1863. Longstreet was opposed to the plan and presented one of his own. Longstreet believed that Confederate troops in the east and combined with forces from Johnston and Bragg should conduct an operation against Union forces in Tennessee and push onwards into Kentucky. Longstreet believed that to prepare and mount a large raid into Pennsylvania would take too long and be too risky.
