There were many, many nations involved in the Cold War, but the two biggest are the superpowers of the time, United Statesand the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics (Soviet Union). It was an international competition in many areas, and a very scary time in that each nation was an enormous threat to the other. Each nation made numerous alliances to aid them in their Cold War endeavours, the United States being involved in NATO, and the Soviet Union with the Eastern bloc and Warsaw Pact. In the 1980's, both nations experienced internal turmoil; the United States recovered, the Soviet Union, however, did not. In 1991, the Soviet Union officially ended, leaving a torn-apart Eastern Europe in its wake.
