Franklin D. Roosevelt was President of the United States during most of World War II. His death in April, 1945 occurred in the same month as the suicide of Adolf Hitler, just as the fighting in Europe was coming to an end. However, the war in the Pacific against Japan was still going strong when Harry Truman was sworn in. It was Truman who authorized the use of atomic bombs against the Japanese cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, despite the fact that about 87% of the bomb's creators signed a petition urging Truman to first demonstrate the bomb's power to the Japanese in an uninhabited area.
