As prime minister, General Hideki Tojo was the leader of Japan during World War 2 until the middle of 1944. He had replaced Konoe in 1941 shortly before Pearl Harbor. Tojo was replaced by Koiso, who was followed by Suzuki. Tojo and several other Japanese leaders were tried and executed as war criminals.

While Hirohito was the emperor, the prime minister for most of the war was a general, Hideki Tojo. But although both controlled the decisions for war and such, neither was a true dictator.

Hirohito was not a "dictator" in the Hitler or Mussolini mold, because he was actually thought of as a god by the Japanese people, and by all accounts they were willing to fight to the last man, woman and child if the Americans had ever invaded the mainland. Hitler and Mussolini were in a special category of authoritarian governments called totalitarianism, such as the communist USSR under Stalin.

Japan's monarch was Emperor Hirohito. When Japan made its incursion into China in 1937 the Prime Minister was Fumimaro Konoe. Hideki Tojo became the Prime Minister on 18 October 1941.
