Following the defeat of Japan in WW II, the United States and the Soviet Union, jointly occupied the country. The United States occupied Korea, south of the 38th Parallel and the Soviet Union occupied Korea north of the 38th Parallel.
After World War II Korea was still a whole country controlled by France. Eventually through persuasion from France, America intervened and split the country into two halves: North and South Korea. The North Korea was controlled by a communist leader Kim Il Sung, while South Korea was controlled by America as a democracy. America told the Kim Il Sung there would be elections to be held to allow the people of Korea decide whether they wanted to be controlled by a democratic government or a communist society, believing they would want a democratic government. This attempt failed.
The US controlled the southern part of Korea while the norther part was controlled by the Soviet Union. The country split on the 38th parallel and the north is communist the south is non communist.
