There actually was no fighting, as it just was a standoff between Russia (Soviet Union at the time) and The U.S, both superpowers with nuclear weapons. So there you go.

That was why the conflict stayed a 'cold war'; both sides tried to undermine and destroy each other, but they dared not let it go to actual fighting - that would have destroyed them. It was called the Cold War because there wasn't any actual fighting, but the US and Siberia/Russia were keeping an eye on each other in case one decided to start fighting.
