The German Nazis started the fighting when they invaded Poland in September 1939 and fighting world wide continued until August 1945 when the Japanese surrendered. Obviously were were battles and skirmishes that occurred after the surrender papers were signed because it took time for all the forces around the world to be notified the war was over and all fighting was to cease.
If you are asking when the US Forces and the British Forces then the answer is the Brits had to start fighting in late 1939 and the US began fighting the day Pearl Harbor was bombed. The existing troops on the Pacific Island had to fight right away at Midway, Philippines and a few other places. When existing soldiers, aviators, sailors, Marines stationed in the US mainland were sent in December of 1941 they were put into battle right away as replacements for the forces who had been wounded or needed a break.
Many women were issued orders within days and weeks to relocate to Pearl Harbor, Midway (not the Philippines) and some medical ships. They served as nurses, clerks, commanding officers of the women and some went as volunteers for the Red Cross.
