The attack on Russia was a surprise attack and caught the Russians off guard. Hitler's army advanced in three large attack groups to Leningrad, Moskow and stalingrad. At first they managed to capture or kill millions of Russian soldiers. However, just like Napoleons grand armee 150 years earlier the German army was ill prepared for the Russian winter and the German army became weakened. Also Hitler became more mentally instable.
In 1943 the Russians started a counteroffensive at Stalingrad surrounding a German army of over a million soldiers. The Germans could have retreated earlier but Hitler demanded that they stayed in the city and that he would send a rescue army. A rescue army he did not have. The surrender of surrounded Germans after weeks of fighting is considered the beginning of the end for Nazi-Germany. From this point on the Russians kept pushing the Germans back with superior numbers of tanks and soldiers. Meanwhile the Germans had also lost air superiority to the British and Americans and were pushed back in Africa as well.
With the opening of a second front on D-Day Hitler's Third Reich was facing it's end. The offensive in the Belgium hills of the Ardennen(dutch term) was the last battle cry of the German Army. Hitler kept the "honour to himself by committing suicide when the Russians reached Berlin and Germany had to surrender.
