Despite the name of the Nazi party (Nationalsozialistische Deutsche Arbeiterpartei - National Socialist German Workers' Party), when in power it was deeply hostile to socialism, including organized labor. Instead, it set up its own governmet-backed 'trade union', which was only concerned with organizing leisure activities.

Hitler never banned trade unions. In 1933, he formed two national unions to replace the dozens of poorly organized, badly run organizations. Then he outlawed any new unions, forcing all workers into one of the two unions he created.
