Japan was creating an empire. They called it the "Co-Prosperity Sphere", when US declared war on Japan they began an island hopping campaign to take some of these islands because of there key locations; iwo jima is one of these islands
Some of the most important battles in the Pacific were the following:Gaudicanal, Saipain, Guam, Iwo Jima, and Okinawa. All these were important steps that were taken to launch the assualt on mainland Japan itself. Though all battles had importantese other wise the U.S.A. wouldn't have invaded the enemy held island.
Battle of Antietam.
The Battle of Fort McHenry. Francis Scott Key was present at the battle, so he wrote a poem about exactly what he saw.
Some key battles were..... The Attack on Fort Sumter which began the Civil War
Several exist, the Battle of the Atlantic, the Battle of Britain, Kursk, Stalingrad, D-Day and the Battle of the Bulge. For the Pacific: Pearl Harbor, Singapore, Guadalcanal, Midway and Iwo Jima. All of these were decisive and shattering events that did or could have changed the nature and results of WWII. The Battle of Electronics (in radar and cryptography) can't be forgotten. The Atomic bombs placed on Hiroshima and Nagasaki were a battle of their own.
There were many. Guam, Tarawa, Iwo Jima, etc. Try doing a search on the Internet or look it up in an encyclopedia. The Battle of Coral Sea was a key one. Guadalcanal was a long campaign and bloody. The battle for Okinawa was one of the last really big campaigns.

The battles in Coral Sea, Wake, and Midway are considered the turning point in the Pacific Theater. I agree with the previous submission. However those three events were sea battles. In addition, the taking of Guadalcanal provided a logistical base and landing strip to reinforce and supply the Allies. The taking of Iwo Jima provided a landing strip within striking distance of Japan. In fact, by the summer of 1945, the attacks launched from Iwo Jima had destroyed a majority of Japan's military production capabilities.
Hi, The only thing i can think of is the basic answer which is to type some key words into Google.com to get you started. It is the best search engine and might throw up some other interesting answers too. Just typing "iwo jima documentary 1975 1976" gave me over 19,000 results, most of which will be no good, but there is bound to be a gem or two in there somewhere. Good luck.
The Battle of MidwayThe Japanese lost 4 aircraft carriers, the HIRYU, SORYU, KAGA, and AKAGI, along with their most experienced pilots who had fought in the early campaigns of the war and throughout China and Russia in Japan's previous wars. These losses proved devastating to the Japanese campaign in the Pacific, forcing the Japanese navy to take a more defensive stance in the Pacific War. The Americans, on the other hand, had lost only one carrier, the YORKTOWN, which had been previously damaged in the Battle of the Coral Sea. The Battle of Midway was the first major American naval victory of WWII.
Apart from the obvious German Surrender, there were some key events. For example, there was; Case Blue, Operation Little Saturn, Operation Winter storm and Operation Uranus. These were the 5 key events for the timeline of the Battle of Stalingrad.
ANSWERThe United States Marines were assigned to take the islands in the Pacific away from the Japanese. The Japanese had expanded their empire southward of their home islands and had taken over many of the South Pacific Island groups. It was the marines that stormed each beach of each island and took the islands away from the Japanese. Some of the more famous battles took place at Guadalcanal, Tarawa, Peleliu, Iwo Jima, Okinawa and many others. The significance of the taking of Iwo Jima cannot be overstated. There was an airfield on the island and the US Air force needed a halfway point from their airfields to Japan and Iwo Jima was perfect. The taking of Iwo Jima by the Marines was a key strategy to defeating the Japanese by taking the war to their homeland.the marines in ww2 helped as far as infantry and cover artillery. they took Iwo Jima and fought in the Philippine's, they also fought in name and in Korea. the marines were quite possibly the best military branch and still are. they continue their fight in Iraq and in Afghanistan. the marines are still doing their job on the front lines, their stories are sad and true. they've lost countless brothers in arms. Jake roseThe Marine Corps also brought Navajo Code talkers to the islands, since there native language was so hard to learn if you were a Navajo, the Navajo language was the code in WWII that the Marines brought to the battle field.
