Nationalism was a powerful force in ww1. It weakened the Ottoman empire but strengthed Germany and France. However, it left land in the Balkins to be disputed over. Serbia wanted to take controll over all the Slavs on the Balkan Peninsula but Austria opposed Serbian rule. They feared it might lead to nationalistic feelings among their highly slavic population.

Over 2 million people died, over a 100 people were wounded. People starved because the goods were in short supply so people had to limit the amount of goods people can buy. This was called rationing.
