Despite the story about the winter at Forge the men camped there were very well off. National park historians have proven the story we think we know is wrong. The men were well fed, warm, and had clothing. Washington wrote to Congress telling them they needed items because he knew if he told them they were doing well they would cut funding, so he spun a story to keep the money flowing. Martha Washington and other officer wives spent time with their husbands at Valley Forge. Had it been as bad as the story goes they wouldn't have been there. Yes, it was very cold.
