Field Marshal Archibald Wavell had several jobs during World War II. Look him up on Wikipedia.
The things that were rationed at height of rationing were: Bacon and Ham 4oz Cheese 2-4-8oz Margarine 4oz Butter 2oz Milk 2-3 pints Houshehold milk 1 packet every four weeks Sugar 8oz Jam 1lb every two months Tea 2oz Eggs 1 fresh each week, if possible usually every two Dried eggs 1 packet every 4 weeks Sweetsa 12oz every 4 weeks
They had to ration them, there was not enough goods. If they had not rationed it then businesses would have driven up prices. And to make it fair to everyone and prevent cost rises they rationed them. The rest of the goods were needed for the war.because there wasn't much!Because the military had first choice.
During World War 2 any and all surplus in food, clothes, fuel - were redirected toward the soldiers in Europe as well as the Pacific. The families at home were limited in many ways and by having a garden to harvest they were able to eat better to make up for the food rerouted, or rationed for the soldiers.

blown up
during the start of the ww1.
Foods were rationed because they needed the food for the fighting warriors and for the United Kingdom.Tires were rationed because they needed the rubber for the military vehicles and other things.Gasoline was severely rationed because the "war machine" used hundreds of thousands of gasoline daily.Clothing was limited so the uniforms and shoes and field gear could be made.Metals were limited because they went to building the vessels and machines for war.Antibiotics and other medical supplies were rationed to the hospitals and pharmacies so the men overseas could get what they needed. Blood was scarce in the blood banks but people lined up around buildings to donate blood for the US home front and the war front. Now on a more interesting note: They did not have jet planes, global positioning techniques because there were no satellites nor did they have computers! They did not have television, cell phones, but they did have teletype and telegraph and radio.
Albert Einstein grew up in Germany during World War 2
The war was the deadliest in history up to that point
