General Leslie Groves was a US Army officer assigned to the Corps of Engineers. He is best remembered for running the Manhattan Project, which took nuclear physics from abstract theory through to the development of the atomic bombs dropped on Japan.
Just before being given command of what evolved into the Manhattan Project, General Groves had overseen the building of the Pentagon in Washington DC. This was the world's largest office building and under Grove's driving leadership the entire project was finished in one year.
