A dive bomber is a bomber aircraft that dives directly at its targets in order to provide greater accuracy and limit the exposure to and effectiveness of anti-aircraft fire. Used in World War II, they were used in the Battle of Britain. Hitler was going to use his German Dive Bombers, also known as Stuka Dive Bombers, to invade Britain, but Britains radar, a revolutionary object for the time, succesfully stopped Hitlers invasion of Britain.

A dive bomber is a type of plane which can fly downwards in a vertical line, drop a bomb on a target and then change its course back to the sky. They were first used by the Germans in WW2 and they had lethal accuracy.

What kind of aircraft made it out of Vietnam?

The closest aircraft to nearly become extinct in the Viet War was the F-105 Thunderchief, the largest single engine jet fighter bomber in the free world at the time. In fact the "Thud" has the distinction of being America's first & only warplane in history to have been pulled off the front lines due to excessive combat losses. Nearly 400 were destroyed out of 833 built. The famous A-1 Skyraider, the last purpose built single engine PROPELLER driven warplane (divebomber in this case) to fight in a major US war was also nearly extinct. Fortunately some South Viet Airmen flew some of their Skyraiders into Thailand when the south fell in '75. Those A1s were sold to American civilian warplane collectors in the 80s, 90s, and first decade of the this 21st century. So if you happen to to see some A1s flying at an "air show" somewhere in America its probably one of those "escapees" from 1975. The same holds true for the former US Army (switched to USAF in '64) 0-1 Bird Dog reconnaissance/artillery adjusting airplane. This Cessna all metal bird fought its second & last war in Vietnam with well over a 500 airplane loss rate. Very few of them made it out. But one is in a museum (Pensacola?) since it landed on an aircraft carrier during its escape from RVN in 1975.
