The immediate pretext to Kristallnacht was the killing of German diplomat Ernst vom Rath by a young French Jew, who did this as a gesture of retaliation for the expulsion of Polish Jews in Germany, family members of his among them. The sad irony of the killing was that Von Rath was anti-Nazi, and this specifically because of the treatment of the Jews in Germany.
The night of anti-Jewish violence became known as Kristallnacht OR "night of broken glass".
